Katie began playing piano as a toddler, started lessons at age 6, and wrote her first song at age 8. She continued her musical endeavors singing in school choirs, as a piano accompanist, and continued training in piano lessons. She was heavily influenced by the many local musicians of her hometown. Along the way she picked up some guitar and ukelele.

Excerpt from her blog about this process: "When I started doing these things I was really anxious, and was cranky at myself more than once, wondering why I had made such an excruciatingly uncomfortable goal for myself. I thought how easy it would be to just slide back into my old comfort zone and not have to put myself out there. But I just kept saying Yes. After saying Yes so many times externally, I believe I finally started saying Yes to myself on the inside."

The making of her debut album 'Katie D' (which, being a financially struggling college student, took several years to record), represents the overcoming of fear, and Katie's desire to share her music.
